As I approach the culmination of yet another year, I am immersed in an anxiety of "life is short". With that anxiety comes the question: why not make the most of it?
My Martial Arts journey started almost 20 years ago in 1991. Little did he know, a young boy was transfused with the seed of an indominable spirit. The spirit of a warrior.
Although that young warrior did not know it at the time, life"s mysterious ways would one day lead full circle and the Arts would one day be re-introuduced to him. Fifteen years pass. Now looking through more open-minded eyes, this warrior has embraced this journey and made the commitment.
Every day when we wake up, we have desicions to make. God has blessed me with another day and it is up to me to decide what I am going to make of it. Like a fresh sheet of paper in a notebook, each day brings with it the ability for one to re-write the story of their lives.
I have chosen the Journey of The Arts. As life is constantly teaching me, intriguing me, and most of all challenging me, I know that the seed of the Warrior implanted deep inside 20 years ago has given me the power and courage to adopt and adapt.
I am infinitely thankful and greatful to The Universe to lead me down this path. I am starting to see thorough different eyes.
This constant and never ending journey is a gift that no one can ever take away from me.

I will live life to the fullest. Live everyday like its my last. I will only allow positive energy into my life and do my best on not letting any negative energy cross my path. I will surround myself with positive influences and not let anyone bring me down. I will take care of ME and my family and be there for my friends by listening more effectively. I will open myself more to forgive and not hold onto to negative grudges. I will work on patience before I let anger take over.
Victories of 2009:
1. Great annual review at work
2. Learned to let go..i.e negative people out of my life and focus more on the positive
3. Trained hard to pass my Qualifier for BB Candidacy.
4. Ran my lowest time in training and pushing myself..8 min/7 seconds
5 Climbed a rope first time ever
6. Rocked climbed first time ever
7. Read a whole book and finished it.
8. Did every assignment I was assigned through BB Candidacy
9. Earned my Black Belt of 1st degree on Sept 26, 2009

Goals for 2010
Physical - to keep myself in the best shape, eat right, train hard, inside and outside the studio, go to the gym, get my yearly checkups as always, and run so I can be ready for the following years" candidacy for 2nd degree. Learn all the forms, hopefully by mid year of 2010.
Emotional - Work on not letting people get to me where the anger stays with me for a while. I plan on reading more, joining more women"s networking/social groups through Meetup.com which I actually have started back in October but only attended 1 meeting. I plan on attending a lot more this coming year now that my schedule has lightened up.
Mental - ties in with my emotional goals where I plan to have more of a positive atmosphere of people in my life. I"ve already started eliminating a few and at first felt sad about it but I know I did the right thing and I know I will meet better people along the way, especially through network/social groups of people that share the same interests as I do.
Spiritual - I plan on starting to take Yoga classes at my gym, focus more on meditation(finding the time to sit down and actually do this), listen to motivational CD"s like Tony Robbins and much more.

When I started karate five years ago I only came to learn the techniques and how to get stronger. But as the time passed I grew out of that. I started setting goals to which I still have to fulfill. My goals are to not only be physically strong but mentally too and to become a Black Belt in the year of 2010. I made it to this point because of my loving and supporting mom and my helpful sister to help me on the way.

I WILL be a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, employer, and friend by reading my mission statement everyday and following it.
I WILL create a home that has a place of order, truth, love, happiness, and relaxation.
I WILLprovide opportunities for each of my children to become responsibly independent; to motivate and inspire them in order to achieve worthwhile purposes. My greatest success will be through my children"s eyes and to build and positively develop that relationship every day.
I WILL treasure time spent with my spouse by putting aside time for him no matter how busy my schedule may become.
I WILL continue to feed my brain in a regular basis by reading, learning , and gaining knowledge.
I WILL continue to exercise my body regularly in order to become lean and fit, following a nutritious diet and eliminating negative habits that are impacting my health.
I WILLchoose the ethical way by making a personal commitment to being humble, honest, kind, wise and forgiving.
I WILL enjoy every moment along this journey finding laughter, love and happiness with each day that passes.

8/27/2009 12:40:52 PM
I will live my life with integrity, respect for myself and others and find passion in some aspect of every day. I will think outside of the box as the norm, instead of the exception.
I will think things through and find positive ways to work through the weak moments without inflicting emotional pain on myself or others. I will continue to make my physical health a priority and to acknowledge the little things along the way that contribute to this goal. I will learn to let go of the fear and the baggage of the past and open myself up to new horizons and experiences. My life"s journey is to prove that obstacles can be overcome and with guidance and passion I can achieve my own personal success and happiness within myself and share in that with others.

8/13/2009 2:37:11 PM
My mission in life is to be the best person I can be. I will strive harder for what is right. I will always appreciate the hard work of others and try to learn from it. I will grow off the strength and determination around me and freely dedicate myself to any new challenge. I will work hard.

6/21/2009 7:15:51 PM
At this time in my life it is my job to raise my son and lay a foundation that will support him as he grows.
I feel that it is my duty to instill the qualities that will make him an honest, loving and morally sound individual.
I am committed to being a loyal, loving and compassionate partner to my husband and I will support him through good and bad.
I will continue to set goals for myself and strive to keep my body in optimum condition.
I will serve people through using my hands as a massage therapist to make them feel better in a healing manner.
I will work on not letting my fears guide me and strive to come form a positive place.
I will constantly focus on my life to be a nurturing, loving, honest and supportive mother, wife and friend.

6/11/2009 7:53:29 AM
My mission in my life is to be the best person that I can be. The best wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, friend. To do this I always try to think about others and how I can be helpful. I treat people like I would like to be treated, with respect, integrity and honesty. To me, honesty and trust are the most important things in any relationship.
To succeed in life I believe it is important to always put your best foot forward and put forth 110%. Benjamin Franklin once said Energy and Persistence conquer all things. I love this quote because it really addresses the idea of try, try and keep trying because it eventually does pay off. When you put your all into what you are doing you will succeed!

5/7/2009 9:41:16 AM
Throughout my life, I have always set goals for myself and was always determined to accomplish them, which brings me to the person I am today. Until this very day, I can not complain about my results from setting myself goals and accomplishing them. One very important motto I live by is Smile, the cameras still rolling. This may seem like nothing to many, but it has got me through some pretty tough times. What this quote represents is the act of trying, staying determined, and not giving up even if you mess up. Its always best to keep moving because yesterdays history, tomorrows a mystery, its all about what you do in the moment. You cannot change your mistakes, but you CAN learn from them, and this will benefit your own future.
My goal in life is to act as a role model by doing what I do, and learning from my mistakes. I want to be able to teach others the right path, although I had struggle finding mine, because I know with only a little help I can make a difference and help those who look up to me. Particularly, I wish to be a great role model for my brother to look up to. He too attends TKC and will be a Black Belt Candidate of 2010. I hope that I will be able to teach him all I know, help him during his time of need, and make him even greater then I will be.
I wish to maintain my good nature, and focus on my goals so I can accomplish all that I desire. I really believe in myself. I can do anything if I put my mind to it, and thats exactly what I will do.

5/7/2009 9:34:36 AM
I will be a light unto others. That means I will be a good example to others. I will live life to the fullest and maybe spill out a little. I will achieve these goals and more because I wont give up.

Most importantly, I will learn from the best and teach to the best once I know my entire curriculum 100% step by step and fold by fold. I will make sure I put more effort to my school work and studies. I will be graduated from Kumon learning center with college level math, and 12th grade English level in less than three years. Getting my black belt is a great experience in my life. Therefore, as I grow up I want to study and educate myself to become a better person, a responsible and respectful person.

5/5/2009 7:41:14 PM
I will know which principles will be the points of my personal compass and I will live by those principles. To wit,
Courage
I will show courage as I walk the path of my life. I will do the right thing at all costs and at any risk. I will acknowledge that I will make mistakes and I will not fear them.
Faith
When facing challenges, I will not lose hope and give in to fear or despair. I will have faith that I will survive the challenges and be stronger for having surmounted them. My faith will lead me to the right path and the right choices.
Respect
I will respect others and treat them as they would wish to be treated. I will respect myself and treat myself as I want others to treat me. I will accord my children the same respect that I expect from them.
Patience
I will be patient with myself and others. I will remember that my children are young and are continually learning. Likewise, I will remember that I am also continually learning. I will remember that all of us will slip, all of us will make mistakes, and I will not criticize them or myself for the mistakes. Instead, I will learn from my mistakes and will help them to learn from theirs.
Accountability
I will take responsibility for my actions. When I make mistakes, I will own them and I will make amends to those I have wronged. Conversely, when I do something well, I will acknowledge my triumph and will give myself due credit for my efforts and success.
Positive Attitude
I will maintain a positive mental attitude so that people will be lifted up by my presence in their lives and so that I will not attract failure through my own negativity.
Dependability
I will be true to my word and will show others that I can be depended upon.

I, Justin Pennish, will live life to the fullest. To take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way. I will strive for the best in every aspect of life, not limited to family, school, and martial arts. I will achieve success. I will continue to persevere in every way possible as a student of life and as a person. I will treat everybody equally and respect everyone for the human being that they are. I, Justin Pennish, will rise to the challenges of life, and emerge victorious.

5/5/2009 7:32:32 PM
I will be the best me I can be. I will strive to live in such a way that when I die three things can truly be said of me:
He made the world better than it would have been without him.
He became a better person each day.
He was a good person, and made others better for it.

5/5/2009 5:12:43 PM
I want to be the best person that I can be. That means being kind and respectful to my family, friends, and elders. I will continue doing martial arts, and getting good grades in school.

5/5/2009 4:32:35 PM
I will live my life as Christ would want me to live it. I will strive to make moral choice in personal and social situation. I will never start what I will not finish. I will do what is best for the well being of my family, society, and myself. I will not engage in activity that is mentally, emotionally, or physically depleting, but always protect and use what I have been given. I will be the best that I can, but will always aim for better.

5/5/2009 2:24:54 PM
I am a centre of pure self-awareness, love and will. I will bring forth power by improving peoples lives. I have infinite patience. I will recognize the abundance of nature and beauty around me. I will see every disaster as an opportunity.

I will walk a path led by the spirit of the Universe. I will use the tools that have been shown me to develop my connection to this power and to be of maximum service to my family, friends, community and self. I will treat my body with respect. I will fill my mind with positive messages with what I put into it so that I may not work for my brain, rather my brain will work for me. I will not be a habitual thinker but a human being engaged in living life, being a part of life and enjoying life. I will freely and humbly pass what has been given to me to the people that cross my path. I will not cling to materialism or false idols but trust in change and walk hand in hand with my God to be the best human being I can be. I do this for many reasons. One for it is the reason I believe I was placed on this earth. Second to bring respect and honor to my Family and Teachers.

5/5/2009 8:42:26 AM
My goal in life is to be all that I can be I have learned to take all opportunities I might obtain maybe giving it a thought before but, I want to become more appreciative of my parents and be a little nicer to my sister and if I can whenever the opportunities hits me to do random acts of kindness whenever they lie before me, I wish and will work harder in school to try to become a strait A student and to be extremely appreciative to my moms boyfriend David because I really like him a lot, and I hope just to be a better person in general.

5/5/2009 8:31:44 AM
I will stay healthy and fit. Be nice, dont be mean, and people will like you. Make friends, be cool, stay active, and have fun.

5/4/2009 9:03:38 AM
I will stay positive everyday and I will work on not losing my temper. I will strive to achieve all my goals. I will be ready for anything that will come at me during my life time.

4/19/2009 9:26:54 PM
My life is a journey being lived with every moment supporting my goals. I am a lifelong student in a never ending schoolroom with the purpose of striving for an unceasing progression to realize my potentials, fulfill my purpose, and achieve my true design. I will live every moment to fulfill the potential that is in me, always striving for perfection in all areas, not to achieve perfection, but rather to live excellently.

4/18/2009 10:42:37 AM
I am determined to use what I learn in martial arts and to practice it in order to develop myself in the best possible way. I will use the focus and determination I learned in karate in order to help me succeed in every aspect of life. I will stay truthful to myself and to others in order to make the best of any situation. I will not put down any challenges and will approach them with the strategic thinking I absorbed from martial arts.

3/25/2009 11:13:25 AM
I will wake up each day with the goal to try to bring out the best in myself and others. I will be proactive in all that I do, and I will try to rid myself of the very deadly procrastination. I will use my abilities to be a role model for all and be an example that hard work pays off. I will show that any goal that I set in front of me, with enough time and practice, I will reach and set higher goals, because without goals, we are going nowhere. I will stand tall and strong in front of any obstacle that I come upon, and have trust and belief in myself that I will overcome them. I will be a leader and a follower, a teacher and a student, and pass on the wisdom that I obtain from my Teacher and other instructors to those that are willing to learn. I will try to keep the people around me safe, and do my best to try to help those that are in need. And finally, I will NOT let anything stop me from reaching my goals or my full potential and go beyond my limits, because I AM THAT WHICH MUST ALWAYS SURPASS ITSELF.

3/23/2009 4:01:14 PM
My goal in life is to make sure I live everyday with no regrets. I will continue to strive to be a better mother, wife and person through patience, understanding and support of everyone around me. I will work hard to take each day and each challenge as they come and I will try not to stress over the things that I have no control over. I will appreciate the small things in life that I sometimes take for granted and will try always be grateful for the health and happiness of my family.

3/10/2009 3:24:47 PM
A personal mission statement to me is a fluid document. It is mercurial and it is malleable. It should encourage, not restrict. It should promote, not limit.
At this stage in my life, I want to build on and enhance that which I have been successful at. I want to look deeply into what defines success for me. At this moment, success is an outcome that enhances me and the people I love. It is not selfish or monetary. It is not created in a vacuum - yet in the sea of mutual gratification that is life.
I also want to look at that which I"ve done historically that hasn"t worked - either for me or the ones I care about. They say the definition of insanity is performing the same act and expecting a different outcome. I wish not to fall prey to that.
I will be a blessing to my children, my partner and her children.
I will be a fair employer who provides a safe and stable work environment.
I will love and be loved.

3/8/2009 11:03:41 AM
I will listen more than I speak. I will strive for knowledge and fact, and in doing that I will refuse to listen to gossip. I will be open minded to others perspectives. I will not compromise my character, values or morals for anything or anyone. I will be honest and kind to myself and other individuals. I will look at myself before I place blame on other people, taking responsibility for my own behavior and choices. I will help others whenever possible, without sacrificing my beliefs. I will open my heart to forgiveness. I will remember to laugh; life is too short for resentments. I will work through resentments, refusing to hold anger in my heart. I will try to maintain an organized home and work environment. I will stop, think and ask for patience before acting in anger. I will not put happiness in the value of material things, and remember happiness is a journey not an emotion.

11/30/2008 11:50:46 AM
I LEAD AN AUTHENTICALLY TRANSPARENT LIFE PURPOSEFULLY DESIGNED TO INSPIRE TRANSFORMATION IN OTHERS.
I am a leader. A leader leads -and so I keep my path directed towards the most positive and constructive goals. A leader has followers - their welfare and success is how I measure myself as a leader. While I may be at the front, it is not about me.
As a leader I am leading in a certain direction, which implies movement; as I move forward, my team and I leave behind a trail of work and evidence that we are doing the good work - that I am leading in the right direction.
As a leader I am not the "master" - I am the servant.

11/25/2008 8:21:48 PM
I will strive to the very best of my ability, to keep myself physically, mentally and spiritually strong at all times. I will respect my seniors, my family, my friends, my school and most of all myself.

11/1/2008 3:52:12 PM
I wish to make the right choices, surround myself with positive influences and do my very best in all I set my mind to do. I want to work on my committment and follow through to be a person you know yuo can rely on. I want to set and work towards goals that will benefit me and my future. I wish to be strong, honest and memorable. I wish to be a foce of nature. "My religion is simple, my religion is kindness."

To appreciate and enjoy life to the fullest and enrich the lives of those I encounter.

10/17/2008 10:56:55 AM
"I intend"...no, that"s not right. At this point of my life, it"s "I will". There is too much at stake now, and there"s too many people relying on me, for me to only intend to do something. "I will" be the best husband, father, boss, friend and student I can be. I cannot and will not make the same mistakes I made in my youth. I"ll use my life"s experience to help me make the right choices from here on out.
I will be the best husband I can be for my wonderful wife, who absolutely deserves my entire heart and soul. She is the engine that drives our family. Without her, I am but a shell of a man. Without her holding down the fort, while I"m away chasing down my life long dream, my journey to Black Belt Excellence would not be possible. She is more than I ever could have hoped for and I am blessed to have her as my wife and the mother of my children.
I will be the best father I can be for my three beautiful daughters, Lauren, Lindsey and Emily. I will be loving and supportive, patient and understanding, yet firm and unyielding in matters of morality and character. I will encourage my youngest two daughters to follow Lauren and myself into the Martial Arts to set upon their own Journeys to BBE.
I will be the best boss I can be for my crew and my department. I will continue to earn their respect every day, and to help them be the best that they can be as well.
I will be the best friend I can possibly be by always depositing my share in to our mutual emotional bank accounts. I will be honest, loyal, and trustworthy to my old and new friends.
I will be the best student I can be, and represent Team Karate Centers with honor and dignity. I will listen to and learn from my instructors without pause or reservations. I will trust that they have my best interests in mind and I will follow their program to a T. I will be an active member whenever possible within the TKC community and in other outside endeavors as well. As time goes by, I hope to become an Instructor, and to follow in the foot steps of my respected mentors.
I will take care of my health and continue on my Journey to Black Belt Excellence all the days of my life.

I will.

10/17/2008 10:04:33 AM
I intend to be a positive and constructive person. I want to always be honest with myself and others. To always love myself and never doubt myself in anyway. I want to always have an open mind to learn new things and never restrict myself from living my life to the fullest! As a martial artist I have been blessed to have a role as an instructor, and I plan to always do my best to help improve and guide my students down the right path just like my instructors have done for me in the past.

50 Years: I will have lived my life full enough to have earned my death.

7/2/2008 4:10:14 PM
I will live up to my full potential. Never to slack off or give up when things get in the way. Once I learn to work around them I will have the key to being successful.
My Primary Aim
In two years I am aiming to have earned my black belt and be striving for straight As as a junior in high school. I dont think that both of these goals will be easy, but I know that if I want it enough and I work hard, I can achieve it. I also want to be involved in S.W.A.T. because I feel that it will bring me one step closer to my main goal in life which I will explain later. And lastly, I will of course I will be applying to colleges so that I can get a degree in business. I think that USC, CSUN or any colleges close by would be my best choice. I used to want to go to colleges out east but my only reason I wanted to go to school out there was because I liked the location. I had no idea what I wanted to major in and that was my first mistake. But luckily I started karate and found that it was my true calling. I am a hard worker and when there is something that is needed to be done to achieve my dream; I will do whatever is needed to be done to get it, within reason of course.
In fie years I will be in college getting my business degree and either have achieved my second degree, or working hard to earn it. I will be spending most of my time at the studio. I would like to be an instructor because the next best thing to mastering something you were taught is to teach it to someone else and seeing them master it too. I want martial arts to be my lifestyle, not just a hobby.
Seven years from now I will be going for my masters in business and building up my martial arts career. If Masters Fariborz ever decides to branch out I would more than gladly want to be a part of that process. If that plan never occurs I would love to own my own studio one day. The reason I want to major in business is because I want to understand how to run my own studio or help run one without knowing the basics of how a business functions and doesnt fall apart.
In ten years I would like to be either married or a newlywed with my karate dreams still on track. I will be living in a beautiful house on a nice, quiet street in a pleasant area. I will be striving for my third degree if I havent already achieved it by thin. Within the next five years after that I will probably begin a new a new martial arts style while still continuing with Hapkido. By now I want to have two kids and of course happily married.
Twenty years from now I want to be settled with my job whether its having my own studio or managing one. I want to travel all over the world because I feel that part of understanding the world around you is actually seeing it and experiencing what it has to offer.
In thirty years from now my goals arent going to change drastically in any way. Karate will always be on my mind. Of course by now I have been teaching my kids karate hoping that they have a love for it too. If not, I could be a soccer mom too or something to that effect. Ive always known that I will be an involved parent. Always providing them with what they need and more.
When I am sixty-five, I am going to still be going. I may slow down a bit but I wont nearly be ready to retire. I will still travel until I see as much of the world as possible before I leave because I never want to waste an experience or an opportunity that could have displayed itself because I never went out and explored.

6/20/2008 6:35:26 AM
To give my all everyday rain or shine. To be a better son, brother, student, teacher. To constantly work on myself physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. To become a part of the TKC Team. To become a TKC instructor and give the same life changing experience to other people.

MISSION STATEMENT I will strive to condition myself mentally, physically and emotionally. I will be true and honest to myself and others around me. I will be a kind and caring friend to all those that will allow me to do so. PRIMARY AIM Two years from now, I hope to be testing for my black belt. My oldest daughter Hayley will be 15 years old and in the 9th grade. My stepson Chris will be 12 years old and in the 7th grade, he too will be following in my foot steps and testing for his black belt. My son Brandon will be 10 years old and will be in 4th. Finally my daughter Jessika will be 5 years old and just starting school in Kindergarten. I am working toward a debt free future and getting my own business started. I want our family to be comfortable financially in years to come. I want to take the time to learn more areas of my job to allow me the opportunity of advancement. I will aim to become healthy and physically fit so that I may live to see my children have children. Five years from now, I plan to be working toward receiving my 2nd degree black belt. I hope to have my own profitable business and/or be in a higher position at my current place of business. I want to assist my mother in the business opportunity that she may acquire. My daughter Hayley will be graduating from High School, and hopes to attend a university, while my younger daughter will be graduating elementary school. I will have become debt free and possibly be making more money. My wife and I will finally be able to take vacations and travel with our children, so they can see other parts of the world. Seven years from now, Hayley will be attending college and working towards her career. Chris will be graduating High School and will hopefully go on to college. Brandon will be starting High School and wants to play for El Camino Reals baseball team. Jessika will be attending Junior High School and hopes to play softball. I will continue to be the best husband and father I can be, and to be support them in all their endeavors. We will be financially secure and my business will be successful. I will be working toward my 3rd degree black belt and receiving it as well. Ten years from now, I will be 48(wow). As long as my body allows, I will still be pushing to advance my physical and mental health. I am uncertain of what degree I will be working towards or if maybe I will be able to open my own Karate Studio on behalf of TKC, to show the gratitude that they have bestowed upon me. Regardless of what I will be doing at this point of my life, I will always push myself and work hard to achieve the goals that I have set for myself. Brandon will be graduating from High School and will hopefully attend college. Hayley will have moved on with her life and career, and Chris, Brandon, and Jessika will still be attending school. I hope and pray that everyone is happy and healthy. Fifteen years from now, I hope to be still healthy enough to continue with my martial arts, whether it be performing or teaching. Jessika will be graduating High School and going off to college. By this time my wife and I will probably have grand children. I hope to have bought another house and to also keep the house we live in now, since I grew up in this house. I want our children to have the opportunity for their children to grow up in these homes, and to share the memories with them, like my parents did with me. I really want our family to continue to be close and spend as much time with kids and grand kids especially during the holidays. Twenty, thirty, forty even fifty years from now, I hope to be here with my wife and family. I would have liked to have continued my martial arts, but lets be real it depends on my health. I think it will be great to be able to teach my grand kids what I have learned. My children will be grown with careers and family of their own. My wife and I will now have the time to enjoy each other again and we will retire and grow old together. We will enjoy the time we have left spending it with our kids and grand kids and live happily ever after.

6/11/2008 1:45:29 PM

Mission Statement

Read TKC's Mission Statement

As the popular 1996 film Jerry Maguire opens, the title character is wrestling with a number of issues that make him question who he has become. These issues offend his set of values.

In the opening scenes, sports agent Maguire goes so far as to say he hates himself -- and then corrects himself to say he hates his place in the world.

So, he writes what he calls a mission statement, "a suggestion for the future of our company." Among the values he talks about in the mission statement are the "simple pleasures," "protecting clients in health and injury," "caring," and being "the me I always wanted to be." He harkens back to his mentor, Dickie Fox, who said sports agentry is all about personal relationships.

Above all, the mission statement inspires him to say: "I'd started my life." As the film progresses, and the mission statement turns out not to be well received by his company, we realize that what Maguire has written is a personal mission statement for his own life rather than for his company-a suggestion for the future of his own life.

In his book, First Things First, Steven Covey points out that mission statements are often not taken seriously in organizations because they are developed by top executives, and there's no buy-in at the lower levels. But it's a pretty safe assumption that there probably is buy-in when we develop our own mission statements.

Jerry Maguire said that people in his business, including himself, had forgotten about what was important. Writing a personal mission statement offers the opportunity to establish what's important and perhaps make a decision to stick to it before we even start a career. Or it enables us to chart a new course when we're at a career crossroads.

Covey refers to crafting a mission statement as "connecting with your own unique purpose and the profound satisfaction that comes in fulfilling it." Sounds pretty close to what Jerry Maguire did, doesn't it?

First Things First is actually about time management, but Covey and his co-authors use the personal mission statement as an important principle. The idea is that if you live by a statement of what's really important to you, you can make better time-management decisions. The authors ask, "Why worry about saving minutes when you might be wasting years?"

A mission statement may be valuable, but how in the world do you go about crafting one? As one way to develop a mission statement, Covey talks about visualizing your 80th birthday or 50th wedding anniversary and imagining what all your friends and family would say about you. A somewhat more morbid approach is writing your own obituary.
