HONESTY AND JUSTICE
BE ACUTELY HONEST THROUGHOUT YOUR DEALINGS WITH OTHER PEOPLE. BELIEVE IN YOUR JUSTICE, NOT FROM OTHER PEOPLE, BUT FROM YOURSELF. TO THE TRUE SAMURAI, THERE ARE NO SHADES OF GRAY IN THE QUESTION OF HONESTY AND JUSTICE.
THERE IS ONLY RIGHT AND WRONG.

Honesty- this is one of the most important things to me. But, I have a very hard time with believing what people tell me is the truth. Justice-I think can only sometime come with honesty. I guess they go hand and hand, but I think only if you know exactly the truth about everything. And I guess that for me is the mystery!!!

The first thing i thought about was, not to think about what others will think of your comments. You should be confident with youself.

Since studying martial arts I have become more interested in the teachings of Eastern Philosophy and Zen. The Samarai Code of Honor strikes me as very pure, honest.

I believe that honesty is something that you are taught early in life. It is something that friendships and relationships are built on. I try to be as honest as humanly possible, though there are times when we tell (white lies) , We teach our children to be truthful and honest. I feel if one is honest to another person, then you shall recieve honesty in return. For me, being honest in relation to training for my Black Belt is actually practicing and challenging myself to fullfill the commitment I made with myself five years ago.

I agree that there are no shades of honesty, but to find complete honesty is an exceptionally rare thing. Even silence (or that portion of an incomplete statement left unsaid) could amount to dishonesty. In our society, complete honesty is just not appreciated or tolerated, for example where such honesty might needlessly harm the feelings of another.
Still, it is a precept worthy of effort. For us mortals, it may be more healhy to view each transaction or communication with an individual separately rather than judge yourself forever "dishonest" because complete honesty was not achieved just once.
I wonder if complete honesty is easier to achieve if one has loyalty only to one person, as did the Samurai, compared to our society where loyalties are split between many.

Gi
My first thought is how Gi in Japanese(samurai) culture represents both Honesty and Justice. I think of them as two distinctly different concepts. Honesty for me is a simple concept, it means truthfulness to one self and others. Justice, to me represents moral righteousness as well as fairness; I don’t think that upholding these virtues is synonymous with honesty.

For me, the value of GI equates to living ones life following the values of Black Belt Excellence in all life experiences. It is self imposed and comes from within, not from any external factors.
Honesty and justice lend themselves to black and white. This I completely agree with and can understand and model in many aspects of my personal and business life.
With respect to relationships, this can seperate true friends from not so true friends. By this I do not mean brutal honesty to hurt someone or to drive wedges between individuals in order to further ones own relationships, but rather to be honest with an individual and address issues one on one and not bring others into the conversation. Bringing others into the conversation is simply introducing the gray area into the conversation.
By applying this principle, I believe it would increase peoples repsect for each other as people would understand that issues addressed are from the heart, unconditional and not manipulated for ones own advancement or benefit.
In all personal dealings, including my Black Belt Journey, I alone must look in the mirror at the beginning and end of each day and be 100% honest with my performance and effort.

Gi represents me in everything I do. I work hard on being honest in everything I do. I apply it to every aspect of my life and I take pride in being honest because that is who I am
