One man"s observations of Saturday"s Black Belt Spectacular...

The Macro: I thought the overall production quality of the event was outstanding. I say that from a spectators point of view, who was there for over ten hours. Think of it, I was there for over ten hours not as a participant, but as someone who was only watching the festivities. Things I love to do, I couldn"t do for ten hours. I couldn"t watch a USC football game for that long. I couldn"t play golf for that long. A ten hour movie, forget about it. So to be so transfixed on something, and enjoying myself for so long, speaks volumes of just how entertaining the Spectacular was.

There was always something interesting going on. It moved along at a pace that the Academy Awards show should envy and try to emulate. It was quick and exciting. When Lauren would tug on my sleeve to go outside to get her a snack, I rushed her with some annoyance because I just knew I"d miss something really cool. (She was really good the whole day though and a real trooper)

The panel was a veritable who"s who of the Martial Arts community. Not only were all of our great instructors, past and present, there, but a plethora of dignitaries from the fight industry, ranging from Champion Boxers, to Olympic Gold Medalists, to a Martial Artist with screen credits as long as your arm.

And the percussionist...incredible. The music and the ambiance of the candle lit isle...breathtaking. Among Mr. Fariborz many talents is obviously event planning and production coordination. Bravo & well done Sir !

The Micro: There is so much and so many to mention, but I have to start with little Miss Ava. How precious was she? But make no mistake, she is not our mascot or a novelty act, but a real and fantastic Martial Artist. And that fact shouldn"t be overlooked because of how utterly adorable she is. But my-oh-my, what a cutie! Then in the same family, her mom Terri, doing the Student Creed Form in Thai and her brother receiving his 2nd degree Black Belt as well. It showed how family friendly and a what a friendly family TCK truly is.

Speaking of families, Max and Cassidy V. made Ms. Linda proud with their outstanding performances. Same goes for Hailey and Ryan W. in making Ms. Leah the mother of two new Black Belts, while being one herself. Mr. Jamal, you were very inspirational with your courage in the face of pain and how you persevered. Ali, you not only passed your test, but I give you an A+! And of course, Mr. Jason, Mr. James and Miss Jennifer, your family is this year"s standard bearers of TKC because of your excellence and dedication to the practices and principles of the Martial Arts.

Team Florida. You thanked us for having you there. No, no, no, we thank you for coming. You added so much style and flair to the program with your own versions of the Blend, and were fantastic in incorporating our Forms into your own routines. And Miss Marissa, you are one of the best Martial Artist I have ever seen. Your Forms looked as beautiful as they did lethal. All of you guys were terrific! Please keep in touch for you will all be missed.

Mr. Joe and Mr. Tim. Stuart and I hope to be like you guys in a couple of years...Like a fine wine, the older we get, the better we get, right? Way to go guys, you were flying!

Messer"s Lance, Shawn, David and Jake. TKC"s future is so bright because of the likes of young men of your caliber. With your kindness and respectfulness, your skill and willingness to share what you have learned, we the students of TKC all are the beneficiaries. Your hard earned Black Belts epitomize the Excellence that Mr. Fariborz  preaches. Congratulations Gentlemen.

Miss Mishelle and Miss Roxy, the kicking line is your stage. Your kicks were so crisp, so sharp and way HIGH !!! Such balance and grace. And Miss Mishelle, your Demo with those trident things looked perfect!

Miss Lily, you are your Daddy"s daughter! But to be so young and so good right now, I"m guessing you"ll even pass him up too some day! Mr. Amir, I can only imagine the pride you must be feeling towards your baby.

Ms. Marnie. Maybe you were like a duck in water at the Spectacular...calm on the surface, but paddling frantically underneath, I don"t know. But you appeared so calm and collected, that it seemed like you have been doing Hapkido for a decade. You are that good. And you amaze me. Your Demos were spot on and you deserve all of the accolades that you have received thus far...and you"ll only get better!

The demonstration by Mr. Ash"s Junior Demo Team was really sharp and a joy to watch. The kids did great. The early Saturday morning practices paid off in a big way.

The fighting demonstration by Mr. Ash and Mr. Terry was, to use a term from my generation, bitchen! Fast and furious. Where were you guys when I could have used you in a bar a few years back? :-)

My only contribution to this year"s big event was to go get an extra chair for one of Ms. Nina"s guests. I"m not sure if I did it out of respect for her, or out of fear of her because of the Muy Tai fighter she is becoming! Yikes! Did you see her Demo with Sensei Pete? Lauren said "She could beat you up daddy." "Yep" I said, "she could." Congratulations Ma"am on you third degree Black Belt :-)

Finally, I want to take a moment to say that I had been warned that the Black Belt Spectacular can be a very emotional and moving experience, not only for the Candidates, but for family members and friends as well. I thought that I was too excited and fascinated by it all, to be over come by emotions, or to cry tears of joy for my friends. That is until Teresa walked up the candle lit path to Mr. Fariborz to receive her Black Belt. Suddenly, I was walking in the shoes of another human being whom I hardly know, but can relate to so well from the honesty and insight of her journals. The lump in my throat, the water in my eyes and the chill going down my spine, were verification of what I already knew, that I have never wanted something for someone so bad, as I wanted this for her. You did it Ma"am, you did it.

To everyone else, too numerous to name, you were all fantastic, and I look forward to seeing you in your new Black Belts and bowing to you all in the coming days!

Last night in class, we were treated to the ultimate, awesome surprise. Mr. Fariborz himself, taught our class. It was an honor and a privilege to study with you Sir.

We did inside and outside crescent kicks to front, side and back kicks ten times a piece on each leg. Walking out to my car on the way home was a chore, but as the ladies in the morning classes say, it hurt so good!

The 2008 Black Belt Spectacular may be in the history books now, but the year is not over yet. Mark your calendars for the Black Gi Bonanza, October 16th at 7:00pm at Team Karate Centers. Formally known as the Green Belt Grand Ball, this years event will star Mike and Stuart and feature as the bumbling side kick, yours truely. (side kick as in buddy, not as in my Kicking Combination # 3) Come and watch as a half a dozen or so Yellow Belts try to enter the ranks of the Black Gi"s and give the term fresh meat a whole new meaning. I hope Mr. Robert will be there to offer up some encouraging words of advice for us, like he did for those other Candidates :-)


Congrats to all the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree black belts. It was incredible to watch and it gave me a boost of confidence- I can do this!

Wow. What a feeling. People keep asking me what and how I"m feeling, and what I feel most is humbled. I feel that I"ve moved forward and up, and it is my responsibility to be a bridge to those following in our direction. I don"t feel that I"ve succeeded in "out ranking" people. Hardly. I feel that I am now in a better position to guide and encourage people. I feel like a responsibility has been placed upon me. And I want nothing more than to do it justice. Don"t get me wrong when Mr. Fariborz tied my belt around my waste it felt surreal. After fifteen years of excuses and procrastination, I dug in and succeeded in fulfilling a goal set for me by me many years ago. A whole lifetime before me has passed and I look back in disbelief. This really is a life changing experience. Not just as a rite of passage, but I can"t help but looking at things in a different light. It is my responsibility - not just to my belt and rank, but to myself to be the best I can be. I have to earn this right every day for the rest of my life. And I can"t wait. I look forward to that fact more than anything. My friends told me I can finally cut loose and not live by candidacy guidelines anymore, but the funny thing is, that"s not conducive to my new honor. So again. The main feeling I"m feeling is humility, and honor. I want to do nothing that will disappoint my new self. My team was amazing. I could not have asked for better people to share this with. I will remember you and love you always. 2nd Degrees - well done. You should be very proud of yourselves. I know you went through struggles and injuries to make it and you succeeded with flying colors. 3rd Degrees - You truly are an elite team. I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for your team. You are prime examples of what we should train to be. Fierce, strong, humble, (hilarious senses of humor!) and Leaders. Every single one of you could lead an army. Thank you for being an inspiration and congratulations on your success. We never had any doubt. See you tonight. The funny thing is I"m looking forward to fresh meat week. I know, I"m crazy. And. I"m a Black Belt. :] Mishelle

CONGRATULAIONS to all the new Black Belts, 2nd and 3rd degrees. I think we all did a great job. I"m proud of every one, specially the juniors. You guys were on top of it the whole day. I hope one day my kids are as sharp as you were on the mat.

Florida team, I was very impressed by your didcation to Sensei Jarett and TKC. you guys rocked, I am proud to have you as part of the TKC family.

i cant believe i finally got my black belt. through out the entire candidacy it never hit me, i wasnt excited, i wasn"t nerves, i wasnt anything. but the moment i went up their and looked down the row of candles and i looked back on all the things that ive been through to get to that point, all the experiences i had, it hit me like a tone of bricks. if felt like the earth stood still, it was a very emotional moment for me, and those who know me know im not a very emotional kinda guy. i keept telling myself that i wasn"t going to cry, that their was no way it would happen, but when i walked up their i could already feel them welling up, and once Mr Robert was done with me their wasn"t a thing in the world that could keep them from coming. thank you Mr Robert for your kind words. it has been an incredible journey and i got to walk it with incredible people who have been there to help me along every step, and i hope i helped others along as well. ill see you all on the mat, and i hope ill still see all of you when i test for second degree.

Hey everyone.  Thank you Janet for your kind words.  I am very glad that you were my guest.  Yesterday was amazing.  Congradulations to everyone who tested at the spectacular.  I never had an experience like this before.  The feeling of walking down the candle light ceremony is amazing.  Everyone did great out there.    Mr. Jason, you are an incredible person.  Daddy you are a great role model.  Even though you were in pain you went out there and gave it your all.  Thank you Mr. Fariborz for everything you have done.  I can"t wait to take my first black belt class tomorrow.

Yesterday"s Spectacular was so moving - I"m so happy for everyone.  Congratulations!  What an amazing experience to have that drummer!  I was also touched by his speach - anyone who was in the room could feel the significance of what was going on in there.  The belt doesn"t mean nearly as much as what goes into it, all the countless hours of work, and all the years of growth, and now the changes that you will feel going forward.  Nothing is the same.  This accomplishment will enrich everything else you do.  My feelings yesterday were almost as powerful as last year when I earned my belt.  Afterwards, I didn"t quite know what to do with myself.  The experience is so profound, and I was just thinking about what it all means... the hard work, the dedication to excellence, and the subtle payoff - I say subtle because it"s not like a medal you wear on your chest for everyone to see.  You don"t go around in your everyday life telling everyone you"re a Black Belt, and you don"t wear it outside the studio (except maybe to sleep!) but you just have to know that it"s an invisible badge of honor... and you have to make it mean something.  I wish all of you much joy and success in your new rank, and in your new stage of life.  Rock on. ~ Jill

Here are a couple of memories I would like to share of Friday night and Saturday.

At the Friday night BBC Dinner I was "served" a meal by Ali.  He was adorable!  When he came up to me to ask if I would be his guest, I tried to pretend to give him a hard time as Mr. Fariborz had joked about, but he was just so charming.  I of course said yes and during dinner he told me that he had spotted me from the mat and had hoped no one else would ask me before he could.  That made me feel very special.  (And boy was I glad that I didn"t give him a hard time!)  Thank you Ali, for selecting me as your guest.  I look forward to getting to know you better.
 
I would also like to mention that on Friday evening"s "mini film show", Mr. Jason"s video was so very touching.  What a wonderful brother Jason is to wait for his sister Jen to test for 3rd Degree BB.  And I cried when Jason admited that his brother James was a better martial artist than he.  Mr. Jason is an outstanding artist himself!  The kind words he said about his team mates shows the type of guy he is.
 
On Saturday at the Spectacular there were many wonderful memories, too many to state.  But again, I found myself crying over a few things.  Three that I can think of now are Mr. Bill"s words to Mr. Fariborz that he said in Farci (I"m not sure how to even spell it) along with his commitment to learn the language; watching Mr. Jason walk up to receive his 3rd degree belt, and watching Jake receive Master Fariborz belt. 
 
Okay, really I have one more tearful moment when I cried most of all.  When Joe walke up for his belt I cried harder for every step he took.  I knew he was taking it all in, looking around, and absorbing every nano-second of his walk.  But what killed me was his inching forward because he knew when he reached the end, that was going to be the very last time anything like that would ever happen to him.  It was as if I was reading his mind. 
 
Talking to Joe later, he said I was right.  But he also said, he is not going to dwell on that.  He is looking forward to the next phase of his Martial Arts training.  I look forward to benefiting from his knowledge, his spunk, and his intensity while I train for my Black Belt.

Today"s Journal Entries are rolling in and I keep logging off and back on to check them out.  With all the focus on The Team, from new Black Belts up through Team Florida, Second Degrees and to the Third Degrees, there is one TKC family member I know we haven"t mentioned lately, but who definitely is in our hearts.  That would be Mr. Ash.  Mr. Ash, I wish you could have been part of Team Elite this year.  You would have added even more to our experience.  (Although I"m not sure how we would have lined up on the mat with an odd number.)  Just kidding, Sir.  We would have made room for you.  And in case you didn"t know it, each of us kept you on our minds throughout the entire 6 months.  You were with us in spirit.  Now we get to cheer you on from the sidelines as you take the next step on your Journey.  We will be sharing your successes, and I know there will be many.  Considering those who may be testing with you in 2009, I know that your team of Third Degree Candidates will be a most powerful example of Black Belt Excellence.  I look forward to congratulating you and they on your big day.  Demo Team TKC HEAT heat was awesome, your demos were awesome, and you are an awesome instructor and friend.  With humble pride, the 50 Black Belt Candidates were GREAT IN EIGHT.  But I know the Mr. Ash edition will go beyond that, and be SO FINE IN NINE.  Or maybe they will SHINE IN NINE.  Or is it..........

     Just wanted to thank you for all you"ve done to help Syed get his black belt.We are as proud of Syed as we are thankful to you for being his guide throughout his black belt journey.We really appreciate it.
    As for the Black belt spectacular it was very impressive ceremony.It had it all -energy,enthusiasm,determination,
confidence,discipline,harmony and of course the most precious  tranquil and peaceful moments of the finale. It was truly a very pleasant experience which we will cherish forever.

YEsterday was amazing i can"t put into words right now once i get it into words then i really write about it. But it feels great and different. Kari

Spectacular was more than spectacular.  I kept on leaning over and saying to Winnie "I want to be Miss Linda when I grow up"  ......I want to be Terri R when I grow up".....I want to be Marnie when I grow up....I want to be....the list was so long yesterday.  Peer role modeling is such a great example for Maya, as well as our family.  Thank you.  Congratulation to everyone.

as I sit here drinking SODA, (candidate requiremnt no soda)and of which I dont drink anyway but gotta have one today -I reflect back on  a great job  by everyone.I am serious when I say that just days before at practice for many I had an expectation of them that was exceeded yesterday by their effort and energy when they brought it home on the mat at the spectacular.It seemed to me that each person could walk out the door and have self pride .My children always make me proud and to stand up for each one and have my husband wrap Jared"s belt and Ava get her black belt was so rich an experience as  a mother. The second and third degree"s did a great job ,I have to say that the third degree"s are role models for me and were outstanding. thank everyone (the morin"s) Mr.Faramarz for his part in  my journey -if it were not for him I would not be doing student creed in thai or anything for that matter,thank you sir! I also want to say congratulations to Jake who had honors yesterday and most deserved what he got !!! Mr.Fariborz for everything i will never ,ever forget having Mr.Fariborz wrap my blackbelt around my waist.Mr.Bill thank you for what you said and congratulations to everyone.

Wow!  Yesterday was amazing!  Congratulations to TKC"s newest black belts.  Thank you to Mr. Fariborz, Mr. Faramarz, and others who made this year"s spectacular happen.  And, of course, thank you to the Morin family for hooking TKC up with a great location. 

I"m really looking forward to testing in 2009.  See you on the mat!

We did it!  I knew we would.  Energy all day long.  Just a couple of little breakdowns because we are human.  But not normal humans.  Normal people don"t go beyond their limits for hours and hours.  Congratulations to you 30 new Black Belts!  You were awesome!  Second Degrees, what a great display of Teamwork.  And as for Elite, I am proud and humbled to have shared in the experience these past 6 months.  Jason, James, Jennifer, Brandon and Nina, you ARE Black Belt Excellence.  Thank you for having me join you.  It was great.  As for this morning, I am sore all over.  But my sore muscles are reminders of yesterday.  So, today is the first day of the rest of our lives.  I expect Monday"s Black Belt Class will be huge.  It usually is.  It is my firm wish that it remains that way right up to the 2009 Spectacular.  We shared a wonderful day Saturday.  We will never forget it.  The end of a journey.  But as great as it was, the cool thing is that it"s really just a chapter, because The Journey actually continues.  We get to keep on doing this stuff!  I look forward to seeing Joe do his aeriel cartwheels regularly ( That was a special moment.  Quite a nice cartwheel, actually.), Terri Recchia continue to rock the room with her powerful forms (She was awesome), and some old guy I know to kick above his head without having to touch his SHOULDER to the floor (He"s getting better, though,) just to mention a few.  So, see you all on the mat.  It was a wonderful ride.  Let"s keep on going, because it really doesn"t have to stop.  Love, Bill       

yesterday was amazing!!!!! the atmosphere was great. everyone had great energy. it went by so fast that i wish i could do it again rite from the Qualification test. I would to thank my teammates who beared with me for 6 months. The instructers who paved the road to black belt for me. And to mr. fariborz for having such a great studio, TKC. i cant wait to see everyone tommorow in our first black belt class!!!!

Today I went to the spectacular and it was an amazing experience I loveed it.But unforchanatly the only thing I disliked was sitting down for 11 hours but I loved everything else.Mr.fariborz and Mrs.Nina thankyou for letting us do this amazing experience of a lifetime.

Congratulations to all the new 1st degrees, 2nd and 3rd degrees! You all did SPECTACULAR! I hope each and every one of you enjoyed every second of it. The music was FABULOUS and so powerful. I wouldn"t be surprised if we saw new faces at the studio on Monday to start a new journey!

A note from Master Steve Sexton

This is a note to all of the candidates testing in September. First of all I would like to say, that I'm proud of each and every one of you! To have made it this far is quite an accomplishment. I know there was a lot of very hard work to get here. The test is a memory that you will remember the rest of your life, so give it your all.
Just a word of advice. I remember my black belt test like it was yesterday, and what I went through preparing for the big day. I was so nervous. the night before the test I couldn't sleep at all. In fact I spent most of the night practicing in my living room, going over and over everything I had learned. In retrospect I shouldn't have done that. Although by the time of the test I had gotten a second wind from a lack of sleep, I know I would have done even better had I gotten a good nights sleep.
The pressure and the stress that your feeling about the upcoming test is normal. What your teacher wants to see is how you do under stress. Because heaven forbid, you ever have to use your martial arts for real, stress, nervousness etc. is something you will have to overcome to do well. Trust Me! Relax and get a good nights sleep before the test. If you don't know by now what you have to perform at the testing, a couple of more hours of practice won't make the difference. Do well everyone, I know you will make me proud!

To the TKC Black Belt Candidates 2008;
Congratulations to all of you! I have had the pleasure of meeting some of you at the lecture I gave back in June. I just want to reiterate the importance of seeking to understand and to live by what is the Warrior’s Path and to always define your purpose as it is purpose that gives value to all that you do.
A Black Belt means nothing if you have not sacrificed: if you have not taken a deep introspection to realize your weaknesses and vulnerabilities, then opened yourself up to your teacher so that you may be transformed into a truly self-empowered individual; if you have not understood that true strength lies within the spirit; and if you have not understood that power lies in cultivating compassion and empathy towards others.
I hope that all of you have sufficed all the above and then some. Earning a Black Belt is truly a journey, but it is fulfilling only a small facet of that journey that you are celebrating now. It is my hope that you have gained enough humility to realize that the quest for self-betterment is a never ending journey as we must always sharpen the blade as it will continue to dull. In addition, as our Hwa Rang Do Founder’s teacher, Suahm Dosa, have said, “A person climbing a mountain who returns after reaching only half-way is worse than the person who have not started the climb at all. And, once a climber have reached the pinnacle, what he sees when he looks out are more peaks, more mountains to climb. The person who has never witnessed the pinnacle that never started the climb will never see the vastness of what life has to offer and forever live in darkness. And, the one who gave up never reaching the pinnacle has only learned failure and forever will fall deeper into darkness.”
Then, when one of the first mountaineers to reach the pinnacle of Mount Everest who have made multiple climbs was asked, “Why do you do it?”
He replied, “Because it’s there…”
I hope that this will be only one pinnacle of many more mountains in your life.

To all the candidates of TKC.
I want to firstly give my heartfelt congratulations to all the candidates of Team Karate Centers for your efforts in reaching the substantial goals that have been set for you in reaching the next levels in your pursuit of excellence. As I now feel and am an integral part of your academy due to teaching and spending time with so many of you, it is like sharing a wonderful time with my own students and, as importantly, dear friends.

Having been in the arts for over 45 years now, I am of course well aware of the trials and tribulations of achieving higher rank in an academy like yours, that demands and expects a work ethic and achievements far exceeding the norms of mediocrity. But I honestly know, by watching you train and grow, that you wouldn't have it any other way. You all should feel so proud of 'daring to participate' and accepting the challenge put before you to become a better Martial Artist and more importantly, as a result, a better person. So hold your heads up high on this day and know that what you have achieved was done with your determination, your sweat, and your effort. Sure your instructors drive and guide you, but you are the one who individually has to actually turn up to the Dojo each day and sweat and 'do'. So again, I want you to take great strength from that and use it to propel you forward in whatever area of life you choose to excel in.
I finally want to leave you with what is one of my favorite quotes: I implore you to please take the time to read it as it is about 'you' on this day "It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcomings, who knows the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the high achievement of triumph and who at worst, if he fails while daring greatly, knows his place shall never be with those timid and cold souls who know neither victory nor defeat".

Well, the time is here for you now, all the hard work, all the sit ups and push ups, squats, boxing, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, the hundreds of times you had to do your forms over and over again, and lets not forget all the sparring you had to do. After all of that you get to relax for a few days, and then you know what? You have to start all over again for the next step in the martial arts so you can start your quest to become a complete martial artist.

This will be a day you will never forget, it will equal the day you graduate, your first car, the day you fell in love, your first kiss. I tell you this, the first time you come to class after your graduation ceremony and you tie your black belt around your waist for the first time, when you tie that knot and snap it tight you will feel magic, you will feel a great sense of accomplishment, and even power you didn't know you had.

Please enjoy this very special day, you have earned it with all your hard work. Remember to give back to the lower ranks like the black belts gave to you. It's up to you now to keep the traditions going. Kudos

In Kenpo, the image of the tiger represents the physical aspect of the art. The eager student constantly working on their punches, kicks, forms, techniques and sparring, focusing only on their own speed and power. As you progress through the system and move up through the color belts, your concentration, confidence and self mastery grows. Over time you develop the mental and spiritual focus within the art. This wisdom and experience is represented by the image of the dragon. The more you develop your “tiger” the stronger your “dragon” becomes. The day you receive your black belt is the moment your “tiger” and “dragon” become one.

I would like to congratulate all of the black belt candidates this year. It is a tremendous accomplishment to reach this level. Welcome to the 8 2008 TKC Black Belt Spectacular. This is a celebration of excellence for all those who have worked very hard to attain the rank of Black Belt in Hapkido/Blend. These candidates have been preparing for this final event for the past 6 months. Each candidate has had to participate in, and pass 3 qualification exams along with special events to earn their “ticket” to the Black Belt Spectacular. Our candidates each come from different backgrounds and lifestyles. While each candidate possesses a different reason why they started this journey, they all must address the same question: “Will I have a Black Belt, or Black Belt Excellence?

Black Belt:
Completing the minimum requirements to achieve a Black Belt in the quickest and easiest possible way without creating any possibilities.
Requires the minimum required attention and energy level.
Result: A beautiful Black Belt to wear around your waist.

Black Belt Excellence:
Completing the requirements to your highest possible level and taking every moment as if it is the last moment you have to train.
Committing yourself to create an unprecedented future and to create limitless possibilities as a Black Belt, not only in martial arts, but in life.

To Master Fariborz’ Black Belt Candidates:

Of all the moments in your life you will remember, your black belt test should stand out as one of your most cherished and hard-won. The way to make that happen, the way to insure that this experience transforms you in the best possible ways, is to train yourself, in preparation, as hard –and as smart –as you possibly can.

However, you should know that I’m not referring to physical training alone. Yes, you should be in the best shape of your life, but you’re not at your best by simply being physically fit. Your test in an opportunity to strengthen, stretch, and tune-up your emotional fitness –while you tone your body; you can also, mentally, become a black belt, if you work on your thinking while you hone your physical skills.

Physical fitness is about your lean muscle mass, it’s about your heart rate, your conditioning, your flexibility, timing, strength, and aerobic capacity. Your martial skills, the ability to attack, defend, deflect, control, and disarm are all aspects of training your body. Emotional and mental fitness is about how you react to stress. It’s about the way you think about people who have more –or less –than you. It’s about your ability to connect your actions to their consequences, no matter how removed you are from them. It’s about compassion and courage and wisdom and integrity and forgiveness and empathy and connection.

A spin kick to the head can be a devastating blow. A perfectly executed choke can cause your opponent to become unconscious. Either maneuver can, if required, cause severe injury and even death. Anger is an acid that causes more harm to the vessel in which it stands than to anything on which it is poured. Consuming far more than your share of the earth’s resources causes untold pain to people in far off places; people who you will never have to meet face-to-face, but who nevertheless toil in poverty and unsafe conditions because of your demand for the latest short-lived whatever. Cynicism, sarcasm, jealousy, hatred, envy, greed, racism, gender bias, and elitism are far more debilitating, far more destructive and painful than any wrist lock, judo throw, side-kick, or elbow strike.

Being a black belt is an opportunity to be more than simply a skilled athlete. It is a chance to be more human, to open your ability to see clearly, to understand your connection to your art, to your classmates, to their families, to your community, to your nation, and –when you are thinking as a master, to the world. When you step on the mat, you step on the planet Earth. Your self-defense training isn’t just to protect yourself; it is about protecting those you love, those who love others, and every person you might have the ability to protect in any way.

The ultimate aim of the martial arts is not found in victory or defeat or trophies or belts it is in the development of the character of its participants, and most of all in their ability to take their martial arts out of dojo’s and put it to work in the world.

Good luck on your upcoming test. Make it mean something. Make it something beyond your physical participation. Make your test as much about others as it is about you. Make your test a spiritual journey (only you can make that happen). Have a black belt test that is graduation from who you used to be –to who you want to be.

In the end, being a black belt is a practice –and not simply one wonderful achievement.

I always remember one of the most important lessons that Kyoshi has taught me. Congratulations to all of the 2008 Candidates! Especially our new 1st Degree Black Belts …The Enso. As I’ve said many times, I envy you. You will never have this experience again. Those of you, who will choose to go on with your training, will embark on a journey to 2nd degree that will be vastly different. So remember this day. Remember what it took for you to get to this moment. Take some time, and think of the people who saw the heart of a Black Belt in you, long before you ever came to TKC. Honor them! Acknowledge and thank those who have gone before you, the Instructors and Black Belts who offered their guidance and shared their experiences along the way. Above all else, think of the person you once were. Think of that person who had the courage to put on a white Gi and take that 1st white belt class. That person gave up who they were to become you today. As you test, know that all those people are with you today. For me, this was the moment that made everything else that I wanted to do in life possible. I hope you find something equally significant today.

To our graduating 2nd Degrees, The Kendochourai, I say good work. I know the road has been difficult for you. You have been plagued with injuries and left pretty much on your own. Yet, you have persevered. This indeed was your test. You learned to count on yourselves even when nothing else could be counted on. Remember that.

Finally, to or 3rd Degree Black Belt team, Mr. Jason, Ms. Nina, Mr. Brandon, Mr. Bill, Ms. Jennifer, Mr. James, or as they are collectively known …The Elite. I say with great respect ….CONGRATULATIONS!!! I have known all of you for more than a decade. We have trained together for years, through good times and bad. You have shown that Black Belt Excellence transcends what we do on the mat. You display excellence in your training, in your work, in your duty to your families. Dear Candidates,
What a year it has been. A Year Full of energy, excitement, hard work, dedication, determination, nervousness, frustration, feelings of accomplishment and of failure, feelings of being overwhelmed, having tears of joy and pain, and making close friends and lifetime bonds. And everyone of these feelings are what you are supposed to experience going through your black belt journey. These experiences are what make you a brand new person. A person who is stronger both mentally, physically, and emotionally. If you went through this journey without feeling any of these emotions, then your heart was not in this test and this wasn't the time for you, but I don't believe that was the case for any of you. I am very proud of all of you. I have seen people overcome and surpass what they thought their limits were and now they truly believe that anything they want to do is possible, and that is what I believe the whole meaning of your black belt test and journey is about. Cherish the close bonds you have made with each other throughout your test because without each other's help, support, guidance, and love from not only your teammates and but your families and your teachers, none of these life changing experiences would have been possible. As you walk down the candle light, I want you to reflect on everything you went through and every challenge that you had to overcome to get to this point in you life, and enjoy every second of it because you all deserve it. And finally, just remember that becoming a black belt is only the beginning in your martial art life. You have created a strong base, now it time to see how far you can take it and how great of a martial artist you can be. Much Love to all and just know I will always be here to help you in any way that I can to make you into even better martial artists. Once again congratulations to all those who have earned their black belts or the next degree and remember, becoming a black belt isn't the hard part, having black belt excellence is what makes you a true martial artist. Congratulations to all of you for earning your black belt. You have spent many months training for this. Countless hours of practicing katas, kicks, punches, holds and take downs. You endured endless push ups, pull ups and ran mile after mile. You conquered many physical and mental challenges and developed relationships that you will cherish forever. It is one of those rare moments in life that only come once. Each journey is different and has its own blessings. Make sure you take the time to enjoy, reflect and record each moment.

As many of you may have discovered, Martial Arts is not just about the physical. It is much more than being able to execute an amazing round house kick or running a mile in 8 minutes. The study of Martial Arts is much more holistic. It encompasses the mind, body and spirit. It is where one strives for Black Belt Excellence, where reaching deep down inside yourself and committing to being the best you can be in all aspects of life is the ultimate reward and the undeniable gift. You may think that earning your black belt is the end of the test but in reality it is just the beginning.

First I would like to congratulate you all on your decision to participate in this year's journey, for having the courage to take on the challenges you have encountered along the way, and for having the commitment to do whatever was necessary to overcome those challenges. I want to thank Kyoshi for allowing me to be a part of your journey, the Enso team for the opportunity to remember the difference this journey made in my life, the Kendochourai team for reminding me about the importance of continuing this journey, the Elite team for reminding me about the importance of having Black Belt Excellence both in the studio and in life, and Sensei Jarett and his candidate team from Florida for reminding us all about the importance of loyalty, tradition and respect.

I am truly looking forward to seeing the results of your efforts at your Black Belt exam during the TKC Black Belt Spectacular, and would like to remind you all that these are intended to be opportunities for you to have memorable private and public victories. The private victory will come from taking some time now to think about the challenges you have overcome and the efforts you made to get prepared, and during the exam from showing yourself your abilities to stay focused on what you are doing "right now", to challenge yourself to do your best in any circumstances, and to accept both your successes and failures with same grace and confidence. The public victory will come from graciously accepting the praise and credit others give you for your accomplishments and contributions, and from you recognizing the contributions of others who helped you so that they can share in your victory and celebration. Please remember to thank those who helped you along the way: Parents, siblings, Instructors, fellow students. Even co-workers or neighbors. Maybe someone gave you a ride to the Studio when your car would not start. Or made sure a good breakfast was always ready for you the morning of another 6 A.M. Pre-Test. Or even made you keep climbing a nearly vertical rock when you were tired and wanting to come down, only to soon find yourself at the top for the first time. We don't do it all alone. But today's celebration is particularly for the First Degree Candidates, which includes our Team members from Florida. You have all made it to this final moment. I am so happy for each one of you. You have done something most people will never do, nor know the thrill of doing: You have become a Black Belt. And I hope you continue your Journey after today. It doesn't have to end here. As the end of the 2008 Black Belt testing cycle approaches with another Black Belt Spectacular, I'd like to congratulate the new Class of 2008 Black Belts. You have worked hard and persevered through challenges and setbacks, and now the reward for your efforts is within reach. Some of you will decide to move on to other adventures, but for those of you who continue your training, the journey is just beginning. For the past two years, training as a Team Karate Centers Black Belt has been the most challenging, rewarding, and yes, frustrating and sometimes downright frightening experience of my life, and it has opened my eyes to new opportunities both on and off the mat that I never dreamed of. Training at TKC has become a way of life for me, and I believe that it has changed me for the better in ways that still aren't exactly clear to me. Thanks to our Kiyoshi, Mr. Terry, Ms. Erin, and all of the instructors at TKC who have helped me along the way, I have been able to find a new beginning for my life and discover confidence and strength that I didn't know I had. I still feel like I am just beginning my training in earnest, but I know that I am becoming a small part of something profoundly life-changing and bigger than myself, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help create that experience for other students as an assistant instructor. I hope that the same will be true for many of you who decide to continue your journey, and I look forward to training with you in Black Belt Class.

Congratulations as well to the members of the Second Degree Black Belt team. You have all faced significant hurdles to completing your journey, and you have managed to stay the course and finish with grace and integrity.
